Orengo Sparks Debate After Attending Ruto Event Days After Criticising Government

The latest public appearance of Siaya Governor James Orengo has stirred political talk after he attended an event presided over by President William Ruto barely days after he openly criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration.

 The seasoned lawyer and senior ODM figure had just a week earlier cautioned party members against warming up towards the President insisting that the opposition must remain firm in defending the rights of Kenyans.

Orengo had gone as far as declaring that he was ready to lead demonstrations against what he termed as the government’s continued failings .

Especially on matters affecting the cost of living alleged governance lapses and what he views as attempts to weaken institutions.

 His strong stance fell in line with the broader ODM position that has been vocal about demanding accountability and resisting any moves that appear to blur the lines between government and opposition.

But his presence at the President’s function told a different story one that left supporters and critics alike debating whether this signaled a change of strategy, an act of goodwill or merely a dose of political pragmatism. 

Those close to the governor said his attendance should not be read to mean a change of heart merely an appreciation of the governor’s role in representing Siaya interests at the national level regardless of political differences.

According to political analysts such interactions are not unusual between national and county leaders especially in regard to development interests. 

They stated that governors usually interact with the national government for solicitation of funds project proposals or inclusion of their counties into resource allocation.

Even so the spectacle of Orengo sharing a platform with President Ruto has increased pressure within ODM with some members querying whether the party's hardline position can survive the changing tides of Kenya's political landscape.
