Pius Lumumba, a man from Kakamega County, has been released after spending 20 years in prison due to what he claims was a wrongful arrest.
His story has garnered attention as his family and friends celebrate his freedom after so many years of separation.
Lumumba was arrested in 2005 while visiting friends who were being held at a police station.
He went to check on them, not realizing that this act of kindness would lead to his own arrest.
Police charged him with murder, despite his insistence that he was innocent and had no involvement in the crime.
After a lengthy legal battle, Lumumba was initially sentenced to life in prison. In 2021, this sentence was changed to a death penalty.
While enduring this difficult period in his life, Lumumba remained hopeful and turned to prayer for strength.
He emphasized that faith and the support of friends he met in prison helped him cope with his challenging circumstances.
When he finally learned that he would be released, Lumumba felt a surge of joy.
"I prayed continuously, and I believed I would see this day," he said after leaving Kakamega GK Main Prison.
His homecoming was marked by tears of joy as his family welcomed him back, including his wife and children, who had waited for two decades.
During his time away, Lumumba missed many important moments in his family’s life, including his younger sibling growing up. Now, he is eager to reconnect and start fresh.
He has shared a crucial message with others: “Be careful with the friends you keep. A simple visit to check on someone can sometimes lead to serious trouble.”
David Serei, the Commissioner of Prisons at Kakamega Main Prison, urged the community to embrace Lumumba and support him as he adjusts to life outside Serei noted the various programs Lumumba participated in while in prison, which aimed to improve his skills and prepare him for reintegration into society.
