The United Opposition has declared that it will declare its single presidential flag bearer in the 2027 General Election, once the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) National Delegates Conference ends, a step which the coalition has argued will be an attempt to create a united front against President William Ruto.
The opposition leaders, who spoke at the National Delegates Conference of the Democratic Party of Kenya held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi County, also disclosed that they were going to institute legal action against those found to be involved in the recent attack on the DCP leader, Rigathi Gachagua, at a church in Othaya.
The leaders condemned the act as an attack on democracy and free speech and vowed to pursue justice in the courts and perceiving political agitation does not belong in the Kenyan democratic space.
The DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua took the opportunity to restate his dedication to unity in the opposition, saying that there will be personal and party sacrifice to ensure that only one presidential candidate is put forward to run against President Ruto in the 2027 General polls.
Gachagua announced that the opposition was set to deny President Ruto the second term in office and demanded that unity was the only way to get there in 2027.
Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Party, followed the call to unite, saying he intended to hold a national forum that will bring all the candidates under one-term movement. He indicated that the meeting would also be aimed at increasing voter registration in the country.
Kalonzo observed that the increase of the number of voters would be essential in boosting the opposition, and that making joint plans and strategies would eradicate those divisions that would demoralize their campaign.
The opposition have been accused of having internal rifts, which were refuted by former Cabinet Secretary of Interior Fred Matiangi who cautioned that people who had placed their bets on these rifts would not see their money back. He stressed that the leaders were determined to stand up.
"For anyone who's betting on our differences, you will lose your bet. We are going to stand together, and we are going to remain united," concluded Matiang'i
Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua said that the opposition was united by a common vision of restoring constitutionalism, accountability, and improvement of governance in the country.
Karua noted that the unity of the coalition was not about convenient but based on principles, and it was more about building institutions and enforcing the rule of law.
DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa emphasized that unity was not a choice as he called it a must in case the opposition wants to oust President Ruto. It turned out there would be no split votes by fronting only one candidate.
Last to speak, former Attorney General Justin Muturi, stated that the Democratic Party was prepared to contribute towards the coalition and said that Kenyans were politically conscious and wanted change.
