Dennis Mutua, a 26-year-old youth from Machakos, still remembers the countless warnings he received before making the boldest decision of his life.
Friends, family, and even colleagues told him he was making a mistake—but deep inside, he felt it was a risk worth taking.
“Everyone thought I was crazy,” Dennis begins.
After completing college, Dennis secured a stable job in Nairobi. The pay wasn’t huge, but it was consistent. For many people around him, that alone was enough reason to settle down and build a predictable life.
But Dennis had different ambitions.
“I wanted more than just a salary. I wanted freedom,” he says.

While working, he developed a strong interest in agribusiness, particularly poultry farming. He spent hours researching online, watching videos, and even visiting a few farms whenever he had time.
The more he learned, the more convinced he became that this was the path he wanted to pursue.
“I could see the potential. I believed it could work,” he explains.
However, when he shared his idea with people close to him, the reaction was not what he expected.
Most of them discouraged him.
They told him farming was risky, unpredictable, and not worth leaving a stable job for. Some even laughed at the idea of him leaving the city to go back to the rural area.
“They kept telling me, ‘Don’t leave your job for something uncertain,’” he recalls.
For a while, Dennis felt torn.
On one hand, he understood their concerns. On the other hand, he couldn’t ignore the feeling that he was meant to try.
After months of thinking, he made his decision.
He quit his job.
“I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I also knew I would regret it if I didn’t try,” he says.
Using his savings, Dennis moved back to Machakos and started a small poultry farm. He built a simple structure, bought a few chicks, and began his journey.
The beginning was tough.
