“I Was Always Overlooked at Work and Treated Like I Didn’t Matter, Until One Opportunity Came and Completely Changed My Career,” Kenyan Professional Explains

James Kariuki, a 35-year-old professional from Nairobi, spent years feeling invisible in a workplace where he gave his best but received little recognition.

While others seemed to move ahead quickly, he remained in the same position, quietly doing his work and wondering if his efforts even mattered.

“I used to feel like I was just there—present, but not seen,” James begins.

After graduating with a degree in procurement and logistics, James secured a job at a mid-sized company in Nairobi.

It was a good start, and he was grateful for the opportunity. He approached his work with dedication, always meeting deadlines and ensuring everything ran smoothly.

But as time went on, something began to bother him.

Colleagues who had joined after him were getting promoted. Others were being selected for important projects and training opportunities. Meanwhile, James remained in the background.

“I kept asking myself what I was doing wrong,” he says.

Despite his hard work, his efforts often went unnoticed. Meetings would pass without his input being acknowledged. Ideas he shared were sometimes ignored—only to be praised later when someone else repeated them.

“It was frustrating. I started doubting my abilities,” he admits.

At one point, James even considered quitting his job. He felt stuck and unappreciated. But deep down, he wasn’t ready to give up.

“I told myself I would keep going, even if no one was watching,” he says.

Instead of slowing down, James decided to improve himself. He began taking short online courses in supply chain management and data analysis during his free time.

He also worked on his communication skills, learning how to present his ideas more confidently.

“I realized that sometimes it’s not just about working hard, but also about making your work visible,” he explains.

Still, nothing seemed to change—at least not immediately.

Then one unexpected opportunity came.

One of the senior managers in his department went on leave for several weeks. The company needed someone to temporarily handle key responsibilities. To James’ surprise, his name was suggested.

“At first, I thought it was a mistake,” he says with a laugh.

But it wasn’t.

For the first time, James was given a chance to step into a bigger role. The responsibility was heavy, and the expectations were high. But he saw it as his moment.

“I told myself, this is my chance to prove what I can do,” he recalls.

James threw himself into the role with everything he had. He worked longer hours, paid attention to detail, and ensured that operations continued smoothly.

He also took initiative—solving problems, making decisions, and communicating effectively with the team.

Slowly, people began to notice.

Colleagues who had overlooked him started seeking his input. Management began appreciating his efforts. The same voice that had once gone unheard was now being listened to.

“I could feel the difference. For the first time, I felt valued,” he says.

When the senior manager returned, the feedback about James’ performance was overwhelmingly positive. His temporary role had left a lasting impression.

A few weeks later, he was called into a meeting. READ MORE.........
