Shock Exit: Caroli Omondi Ditches Orange Democratic Movement Ahead of Polls, Deals Major Blow to Oburu Odinga Camp

A major political shift is brewing within Kenya’s opposition after Suba South MP Caroli Omondi announced he will not seek re-election under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket in the next general election.

The unexpected declaration has sent ripples across the political landscape, particularly in the Nyanza region, where ODM has long enjoyed strong support.

Omondi, who has been a key figure within the party, revealed that his decision comes after a period of deep personal reflection and changing political dynamics.

In a carefully worded statement, the legislator emphasized that his move should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from public service.

Instead, he framed it as a strategic step aimed at better serving his constituents.

“I remain fully committed to the people of Suba South. My focus is on development and improving livelihoods, regardless of the political platform I choose,” Omondi stated.

His remarks suggest a shift from party loyalty to a more independent, people-centered approach. While he did not disclose his next political move, the statement leaves open the possibility of contesting as an independent candidate or joining another political formation.

Omondi’s exit from ODM is being viewed as a significant blow to the party, which is associated with veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.

For years, the party has maintained dominance in the region, relying on influential leaders like Omondi to solidify its grassroots support.

Political analysts argue that his decision could reshape the Suba South race, potentially attracting new entrants and intensifying competition.

ODM may now be forced to identify and back a strong candidate capable of retaining the seat in what could become a tightly contested battle.

The move also raises broader questions about internal dynamics within ODM, as leaders increasingly reassess their political futures ahead of the next elections.

Such shifts, though not uncommon in Kenyan politics, often signal deeper realignments that could redefine party strength at both regional and national levels.

Omondi has urged his supporters to remain patient as he charts his next course, promising to communicate his future plans in due time.

His announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter—one that could significantly influence the political direction of Suba South and beyond.
