Western Leaders Plot 2027 Presidential Bid, Complicating Kalonzo–Gachagua Opposition Plans

Leaders from Western region have signaled a major political shift after announcing plans to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, a move that could disrupt the emerging opposition lineup led by Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during a burial ceremony in Bungoma County, a section of leaders declared that the region has capable individuals who can mount a serious challenge against President William Ruto.

However, the push to front a Luhya presidential candidate has exposed deep divisions within the community.

While some factions are advocating for an 2027 bid, others are leaning toward supporting Ruto’s re-election and postponing the region’s presidential ambitions to 2032.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa have emerged as top Luhya leaders seeking to challenge Ruto's reelection.

The burial event brought together a mix of leaders from both government and opposition camps. Among those present were:

The leaders present included Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Sifuna, Natembeya, Wamalwa, George Wajackoyah, Boni Khalwale, Godfrey Osotsi, and Consolata Wakwabubi.

Also in attendance were Members of Parliament and local leaders, including John Makali (Kanduyi), Martin Wanyonyi Pepela (Webuye East), John Chikati (Tongaren), Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), Prof. Charles Kibanani Ngome (former Bungoma Deputy Governor), and MCA Polycarb Wandabusi.
