Political analysts and media commentators believe the 2027 presidential race could take a different direction if former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i decides to vie for the country’s top seat.
However, former Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire argues that it is still too early to accurately determine the extent of Matiang’i’s influence on the election outcome, given the many political developments that could unfold before 2027.
Bosire noted that it would be interesting to see how Kenyans respond to Matiang’i’s candidacy at a time when many citizens, particularly Generation Z, are calling for a shift in the nation’s political leadership.
He maintained that Matiang’i’s achievements alone may not significantly impact the presidential contest unless he successfully navigates Kenya’s complex ethnic politics and secures the support of key political power brokers.
Before former President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly endorsed Raila Odinga, there had been speculation that Matiang’i could seek the presidency with former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe as his running mate.
Those plans, however, were overtaken by changing political dynamics when Kenyatta chose to support Odinga and block the presidential ambitions of his then-deputy, William Ruto, effectively ending any such succession strategy.
