"If Opposition Won't Give You Presidential Ticket, Stop That Negotiation" ODM MP Tells Sifuna

MP Caleb Amisi has sparked fresh debate within opposition ranks after claiming that he previously advised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to reconsider his participation in ongoing unity talks if he was not assured of a presidential ticket under a proposed united opposition framework.

Speaking amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, Amisi alleged that he cautioned Sifuna that negotiations within the opposition coalition should be anchored on clear leadership arrangements, warning that proceeding without consensus on a flagbearer could weaken their bargaining position.

Sifuna, who has recently positioned himself at the centre of what is being referred to as the “Linda Mwananchi” initiative, is reported to be working alongside Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and other Orange Democratic Movement (Orange Democratic Movement) leaders who are increasingly vocal in opposing the party’s perceived inclination toward engaging with President William Ruto’s administration.

The “Linda Mwananchi” faction maintains that any dialogue with the broader opposition coalition must culminate in the selection of a single presidential candidate capable of mounting a strong challenge against the incumbent in 2027.

Sifuna has reportedly maintained that unity talks remain essential but insists they must be structured in a way that reflects fairness, inclusivity, and democratic competition among aspirants.

Political analysts note that the emerging divisions highlight deeper ideological and strategic tensions within ODM and the wider opposition, particularly over whether to collaborate with rival formations or consolidate independently ahead of the next polls.
