The United States has shifted its attention to local Ebola preparedness systems after plans to establish a quarantine facility in Kenya faced legal challenges and public resistance.
The move comes as a proposed U.S.-supported isolation centre in Kenya remains suspended following a High Court order.
The court temporarily stopped the project until a constitutional petition challenging the plan is fully heard and determined.
According to health officials in the United States, authorities are now relying on an already established network of specialised treatment centres designed to handle dangerous infectious diseases, including Ebola.
These facilities were developed after the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa to improve emergency response systems.
Reports indicate that at least 10 of the facilities are fully prepared to admit and manage individuals exposed to Ebola and other deadly viral diseases.
The centres reportedly receive annual federal support to maintain equipment, staff training, and isolation capabilities.
The preparedness plan highlights America’s long-term investment in handling infectious disease outbreaks within its borders.
However, the move has sparked debate after earlier remarks from the U.S. State Department suggested that Ebola patients would not be allowed into the country.
Critics, especially in Kenya, questioned the position after reports emerged that the U.S. intended to support a quarantine site in Kenya.
The proposed Kenyan facility was expected to manage exposed but asymptomatic American citizens. The quarantine centre was planned for Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki.
However, the High Court halted the project after a petition raised concerns over transparency, governance, biosecurity, and lack of public participation.
The court further ordered the Kenyan government to release agreements and operational details linked to the proposed project before any further steps are taken.
The issue has already triggered protests in Kenya. Demonstrations opposing the facility turned deadly after reports indicated that at least two protesters were shot during a march to Laikipia Air Base gates to oppose the plan.
