Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has declared that the Luhya community wants the position of Deputy President in the event the united opposition forms the next government, endorsing Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its preferred candidate.
Speaking at a political gathering, Malala said the community was not seeking the presidency but believed it deserved the deputy presidency as part of any opposition power-sharing arrangement.
Malala stated:
"Sisi Waluhya hatutaki presidency, tunataka kiti ya deputy president ipewe Sifuna. We are fronting our son Edwin Sifuna kama naibu wa rais kwa united opposition na sio tafadhali. Kama hamtapea Sifuna hiyo kiti sisi tutaondoka united opposition."
The remarks come as opposition leaders continue consultations on coalition-building and strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
While several leaders have expressed support for different political figures, no official decision has been announced regarding the coalition's presidential ticket or running mate.
Malala's comments are likely to fuel debate within opposition circles as parties negotiate leadership positions and regional representation.
Political analysts note that power-sharing discussions are expected to intensify as the election draws closer, with coalition partners seeking to balance regional interests and electoral strength.
Cleophas Malala has publicly endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for the deputy president position in a future united opposition government, saying the Luhya community expects the slot as part of coalition negotiations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His remarks reflect his position and do not represent an official decision by the opposition coalition.
