Malala Hints That the Luhya Community Could Leave the Opposition if Sifuna Is Not Given This Position

Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has sparked fresh political debate after suggesting that the Luhya community could reconsider its place in the United Opposition if Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is not chosen as the coalition's running mate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a recent political event, Malala argued that the Western Kenya region deserves meaningful representation in the opposition's top leadership.

He said selecting a leader from the region for the deputy presidential slot would demonstrate fairness and strengthen the coalition's appeal among voters.

According to Malala, Edwin Sifuna has emerged as one of the most outspoken and influential opposition leaders, making him a strong candidate for the running mate position.

He hinted that overlooking Sifuna could leave many supporters from the Luhya community feeling sidelined at a crucial moment as political alliances continue to take shape.

His remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are working to build a united front and agree on a presidential candidate capable of challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 election.

While discussions over the coalition's leadership are still ongoing, statements from senior politicians continue to fuel speculation over who will eventually secure the top two positions on the ticket.

Political analysts believe regional balance will be one of the key considerations when the opposition settles on its presidential team. Leaders from different parts of the country have repeatedly emphasized the need for inclusivity to maintain unity within the coalition.

Malala's comments are likely to add pressure on opposition negotiators as they seek to accommodate competing interests while keeping the alliance together ahead of the high-stakes election.
