Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has predicted that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will not be on the ballot as a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.
Kaluma’s remarks are his personal assessment, but they raise questions about Sifuna’s ability to secure the opposition presidential ticket.
Sifuna has emerged as a prominent figure in the Linda Mwananchi movement and has increasingly presented himself as a national political leader. However, one of the challenges he could face is building support across Western Kenya, where political loyalties remain divided.
Senior leaders such as Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula have maintained significant influence in Vihiga and Bungoma counties respectively. Both leaders are currently allied with President William Ruto.

In the 2013 presidential election, he defeated Raila Odinga in the county. Although Raila won Vihiga in 2022, Ruto also received substantial support in the region.
Kakamega and Busia could present a different challenge. The two counties have traditionally been strong areas for ODM, but the party entered into a broad-based government arrangement with Ruto. Several ODM leaders from the region are now working with the government.
This means Sifuna cannot automatically assume that the traditional ODM support base will back his presidential ambitions. The eventual voting patterns in Western Kenya could therefore depend on how political alliances develop before the 2027 election.
Sifuna could also face competition from within the Linda Mwananchi movement. The coalition brings together politicians with different political backgrounds and presidential preferences.
For instance, Kisii leaders such as Senator Richard Onyonka and Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi have been associated with former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, while Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako has links with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Sifuna’s growing national profile gives him an important platform, but securing the opposition ticket could require more than personal popularity. His ability to build alliances, attract support beyond his traditional political base and maintain unity within Linda Mwananchi could determine his chances of becoming the opposition’s presidential candidate in 2027.
