Wafula Buke Reflects on the Legacy of James Orengo: A Selfless Patriot and Reform Icon

Veteran activist Wafula Buke, a longtime ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has shared a heartfelt reflection on his meeting with Siaya Governor James Aggrey Orengo .

Praising the ODM strongman as one of Kenya’s most selfless and principled reformists. 

Buke, who has been a constant figure in Kenya's struggle for democracy, described Orengo as a man who has consistently stood tall in every chapter of the nation's political evolution.

Buke arrived at Orengo's Ugenya home an hour before their scheduled meeting, a gesture of deep respect for the Siaya Governor.

 In his moving account, he traced Orengo’s extraordinary journey from his days as a fearless student leader at the University of Nairobi in the 1970s .

To becoming one of Kenya’s youngest MPs and a key figure in the fight for multi-party democracy.

Buke recounted Orengo’s courage during the Kenyatta and Moi eras, highlighting his defiance of key figures like Attorney General Charles Njonjo and his active participation in the historic Kamukunji protests, which earned him a place among Kenya’s legendary reformists.

 Orengo's unwavering stance against authoritarianism has cemented his legacy as a leader who has always championed the cause of the people, often at great personal cost.

Further praising Orengo's intellect and strategic thinking, Buke credited him for his significant role in the formation of opposition unity movements.

Such as Muungano wa Mageuzi and FORD, which laid the groundwork for the rise of the NARC coalition and the eventual election of Mwai Kibaki in 2002.

 Buke also emphasized that Orengo, unlike many in Kenyan politics, has never been tainted by corruption or land-grabbing scandals.

Instead offering his legal counsel to both Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Raila Odinga without seeking personal gain.

Buke recalled the emotional moment when Orengo fainted upon hearing of Raila Odinga’s death in India, a testament to the deep personal and political bond they shared. 

In closing, Buke affirmed that while Orengo may never ascend to the presidency, history will remember him as one of Kenya's most consistent, honest, and courageous patriotic.
