The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has reported widespread human rights abuses surrounding the November 27, 2025, by-elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, December 11, the commission revealed that violations occurred before, during, and after the polls, raising serious concerns about the conduct of the mini-elections.

The commission documented three deaths during the campaign period. A man over 70 years old died in a stampede at a rally in Kabuchai Ward on November 23, while two others were killed in Kasipul Constituency on November 6 amid clashes between rival supporters.
Property destruction was also reported. Incidents included attacks on Marina Resort on November 3, the home of Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga on November 22, and Down Hill Springs Hotel on November 26, where vehicles belonging to DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako were vandalised. KNCHR continues to verify additional reports of property damage.
Cases of physical assault, intimidation, and inhumane treatment were widespread. Over ten individuals injured during a Malava hotel attack were treated at Webuye Hospital.

In Homa Bay, MP Peter Kaluma was attacked at Agoro Sare Primary polling station, while former Attorney General Justin Muturi was involved in an altercation at a polling centre in Mbeere North.
Other violent incidents included a machete attack near Chwele AIC Church and serious injuries outside Kathese polling station in Mumbuni North.
During a Thanksgiving service in Kariobangi North, a youth clash left one person with bullet wounds.
KNCHR called on law enforcement to conduct thorough, impartial investigations to hold perpetrators accountable. The commission emphasised that these abuses violated both the Constitution and Kenya’s human rights obligations.
The report comes shortly after the United Opposition criticised the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair, Erastus Ethekon, for claiming that elections cannot be rigged.
