One of the allies has dumped the top leadership of the United Opposition, which includes former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka, former defense cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa, former interior cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi, and former speaker of the national assembly Justine Muturi.
This follows the former candidate for Mbeere's MCA elections under Justine Muturi's DP party leaving the United Opposition and joining President William Ruto's United Alliance party.
Hon. Deniss Itumbi claimed on his social media page that Hon. Kegoro left the DP party and joined the UDA party, where he was chosen as one of the Grassroots Leaders in an election that took place over the weekend.....To Read the Whole STORY CLICK HERE
A key development was a high-profile closed-door meeting in Nairobi on April 29, 2025, where these leaders, along with Martha Karua (PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Mithika Lintiru, Mukhisa Kituyi, and Jubilee representatives, strategized on building a coalition.
The focus was on uniting against the Kenya Kwanza administration, mobilizing voters, and potentially subordinating personal ambitions for a single flagbearer. Gachagua emphasized unity and voter registration over immediately naming a candidate, stating: “At the moment, we are not interested in identifying the flag bearer who will face Ruto in 2027.
Our priority is to unite the people and ensure more Kenyans register as voters.” Kalonzo insisted his presidential bid remains non-negotiable, while Karua called for national interest over individual ones.
However, the opposition has faced internal challenges, including defections from associated figures or parties.
For instance, some allies or former supporters linked to these leaders have shifted allegiances, with reports of MPs and local politicians moving toward the ruling UDA party amid regional realignments and by-election outcomes.
Gachagua's own Democratic Congress Party (DCP) has seen exits, such as Juja MP George Koimburi and others like Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba criticizing his style and defecting or clashing. Broader shifts include politicians from opposition-leaning groups in various regions joining UDA for strategic reasons ahead of 2027.
