“I Dropped Out of School Thinking My Life Was Over, But What Happened Next Shocked Everyone,” Youth From Mombasa Reveals

 

Ali Hassan, a 23-year-old youth from Mombasa, never imagined that dropping out of school would one day become the turning point that reshaped his entire life. 

What began as a moment of despair slowly transformed into a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and unexpected success.

“I thought my life was over,” Ali says, reflecting on the day he made the difficult decision to leave school.

Ali grew up in a humble neighborhood in Mombasa. His parents worked hard to provide for the family, but financial struggles were always present. 

Despite the challenges, they believed strongly in education and did everything they could to keep Ali in school.

For a while, things went well. Ali was an average student, but he was determined. However, as he progressed to higher levels, the pressure increased. School fees became harder to manage, and at the same time, Ali found himself losing interest in academics.

“I started feeling like school wasn’t for me. I was struggling, and I didn’t see a clear future,” he admits.

The situation worsened when his family faced a financial crisis. Paying school fees became nearly impossible. After several weeks of uncertainty, Ali made the painful decision to drop out.

Breaking the news to his parents was one of the hardest things he had ever done.

“They were disappointed, but they understood the situation,” he recalls.

At first, Ali felt a sense of relief. The pressure of school was gone. But that feeling didn’t last long.

Reality hit him hard.

Without an education or a clear plan, life became uncertain. Ali began taking on small jobs—helping fishermen at the coast, carrying goods at the market, and doing any casual work he could find. The income was minimal, and the work was exhausting.

“I would wake up early, work all day, and still struggle to make enough money,” he says.
