Kindiki Breaks Silence on Why There Was No 'Wantam' During Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta's Regimes

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has sparked fresh political debate after questioning why the term “wantam” was never used during the leadership of former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during a series of development-focused public engagements in Meru County, Kindiki lashed out at critics pushing the “Wantam” narrative, which was popularised by impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The term has become a rallying cry for those arguing that President Ruto should not be re-elected in 2027.

“How come during Kibaki’s time, nobody said ‘wantam’? How come during Uhuru Kenyatta’s time, nobody said ‘wantam’?” Kindiki asked the crowd.
He continued: “Why didn’t they tell Uhuru or Kibaki ‘wantam’? Let’s respect the president. Have we ever had a perfect president?”

The Deputy President went further, revealing he had personally calmed down President Ruto amid mounting criticism.

“I have told my boss to calm down now and let me handle these people,” he said, drawing applause from sections of the audience while drawing jeers from others who chanted “Wantam” in response.
