Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on Kenyans to accord President William Ruto the respect befitting his office, urging critics to uphold dignity in their demands for accountability and leadership.
Speaking during a public engagement, Kindiki emphasised that respect for the presidency is fundamental to national unity and stability, regardless of political differences or personal opinions about the Head of State.
He stated that while citizens have a constitutional right to question leadership, such criticism should be exercised within the bounds of respect and decorum to preserve the integrity of the country’s highest office.
“Before you start demanding that the President be presidential, you must treat President Ruto as President,” Kindiki remarked, in what appeared to be a direct response to growing criticism directed at the Head of State.
The Deputy President noted that persistent attacks and dismissive rhetoric against the presidency risk undermining governance structures and could erode public confidence in national institutions.
His remarks come amid heightened political tensions, with sections of the opposition intensifying scrutiny of President Ruto’s leadership style, policy decisions, and economic agenda.
Kindiki defended the administration, saying it remains committed to delivering on its promises and addressing the challenges facing Kenyans, including the high cost of living and unemployment.
He urged leaders across the political divide to prioritise constructive engagement and national interests over divisive politics that could derail development efforts.
Political analysts say the statement reflects the government’s push to reinforce respect for authority while navigating a complex political environment marked by increased public criticism and debate.
As the conversation around leadership accountability continues, Kindiki’s remarks are likely to spark further discussion on the balance between respect for authority and the right to hold leaders accountable.
