A former ally of President William Ruto has gone public with an apology to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, telling him that those who brushed aside his warnings ahead of the 2022 election now understand what ignoring him cost the country.
The admission comes days after Uhuru addressed a Jubilee Party gathering where he reminded supporters that he had cautioned them against certain leaders, only to be told they were confident in their own judgement.
He accused the MPs they went ahead to elect of prioritising personal gain over the people who voted for them, saying all they do is celebrate whenever money comes their way.
Those words hit home for at least one person who was once firmly in the Kenya Kwanza camp.
In a public address on Wednesday, the former ally did not attempt to defend the decisions that were made or argue with Uhuru's assessment.
She went the other direction entirely, acknowledging that the warning was valid and that the people who ignored it are now carrying the weight of that call.
"Mzee, we are truly sorry for not listening to your warning. As human beings, we are prone to mistakes, and today we have learned the hard way. Forgive us," she said.
She also turned to Kenyans at large, asking for understanding from a public that has grown increasingly frustrated, and making clear that those involved never set out to see the country arrive at this point.
