Here is a Leader Supporting the US Move to Establish a Quarantine Facility in Kenya

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has stirred fresh debate after openly supporting the proposal by the United States and its international partners to establish a regional screening and quarantine centre in Kenya.

Speaking amid growing concerns over regional disease outbreaks, Cherargei argued that Kenya should view the proposal as an opportunity rather than a threat.

According to the senator, the country’s strategic position as a transport and trade hub exposes it to infectious diseases, making strong screening and quarantine systems necessary.

Cherargei noted that Kenya lies along a major transport corridor connecting the Port of Mombasa to countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has previously experienced Ebola outbreaks.

He said the country must invest in preparedness measures that can help prevent the spread of dangerous diseases before they become national emergencies.

The lawmaker further stated that if the United States and other development partners are willing to support the establishment of a regional screening and quarantine centre, Kenya should embrace the initiative.

He argued that such a facility could strengthen the country's healthcare system, create employment opportunities for medical professionals, and position Kenya as a leading regional centre for communicable disease management.

His remarks come at a time when the issue has generated mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some leaders expressing concerns about the safety implications of hosting such a facility.

However, Cherargei maintained that proper planning, investment, and international cooperation would benefit the country in the long run.

The senator also recalled previous attempts by international organizations to establish regional medical facilities in Kenya, claiming that political disagreements prevented some projects from materializing.

As the discussion continues, the proposal is expected to remain a major topic in both political and public health circles, with many awaiting official communication from the government regarding the matter.
