Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has offered a reading of the 2022 presidential election result that places the blame for Raila Odinga's defeat squarely on one person, and that person is not Raila himself.
Muthama argued that Raila did not lose because Kenyans rejected him as a leader or doubted his capabilities. The affection and support for Raila among a significant portion of the electorate was genuine and remains so.
What cost Raila the presidency, according to Muthama, was the weight of Uhuru Kenyatta's association with his campaign.
Backing Raila gave them the perfect instrument to deliver that message. In Muthama's telling, Uhuru did not just fail to help Raila. He actively dragged him down.
It is a verdict that reframes the entire 2022 narrative and one that Uhuru, now loudly criticising his successor, may find particularly uncomfortable to sit with.
The man he campaigned for lost partly because of him. That, Muthama implies, is something worth reflecting on before issuing further political counsel.
