Parents Of Students Linked To Dormitory Fire At Utumishi Girls Stage Protests, Demand This

Parents of students linked to the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Senior School staged a tense protest at a police station on Sunday, May 31, demanding information about the whereabouts and welfare of their daughters as investigations into the tragedy intensify.

The visibly frustrated parents accused authorities of failing to keep them informed about the legal status and condition of the students who were arrested following the inferno that claimed the lives of 16 learners.

Videos circulating online showed the parents confronting police officers and demanding immediate answers.

Some argued that despite the ongoing investigations, they had a right to know what was happening to their children, most of whom are minors.

“These are our children, and we have been kept waiting for hours without clear communication,” one parent was heard saying during the protest.

The demonstration comes as detectives announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the deadly dormitory fire.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that forensic experts analysing CCTV footage recovered from the school had positively identified seven students believed to have participated in the arson attack.

According to investigators, six of the suspects were among students initially arrested after the incident, while a seventh student who had previously been released to her parents is now being sought by detectives.

The tragedy has left families across the country mourning after 16 students lost their lives in one of the deadliest school fires in recent years.

Post-mortem examinations established that 10 victims died from smoke inhalation, while six others were burnt beyond recognition, prompting the use of DNA testing to facilitate identification.

As investigations continue, grieving families have appealed to students nationwide to reject violence and destruction of school property, warning that such actions can have devastating consequences.

The incident has also renewed calls for stronger guidance and counselling programmes in schools to address student unrest and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
