Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has cautioned leaders within the United Opposition against making the removal of President William Ruto their primary focus ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with a local media outlet on Thursday, June 4, 2026, the Jubilee Party deputy leader urged opposition figures to focus on offering meaningful solutions and transformative leadership rather than centering their campaign solely on unseating the current president.
According to Matiang’i, the opposition's mission should be to deliver real change for Kenyans and present a clear vision for improving governance, economic opportunities, and public services.
He warned that leaders could spend countless hours strategizing on how to remove Ruto from office, only to end up replicating the same governance failures they currently criticize.
Matiang’i argued that political competition should be driven by ideas and policies capable of improving citizens' lives rather than by personalities or political rivalries.
He further stated that within months of a new administration taking office, Kenyans should be able to see tangible improvements through effective leadership, better service delivery, and measurable progress in addressing national challenges.
The former Cabinet Secretary remains one of the leading figures expected to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 presidential race, with his growing political profile continuing to attract attention within opposition circles.
