Opposition Unity Talks Gather Pace as Matiang’i Signals Readiness to Back Joint Candidate

Political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election is beginning to intensify, with opposition leaders making fresh moves as they prepare for a tough battle against President William Ruto.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has now hinted that he could support a joint opposition presidential candidate if leaders agree on one person through a fair process.

Speaking during ongoing opposition consultations, Matiang’i said the main goal should not only be removing the current administration from power, but also offering Kenyans a better leadership plan.

According to him, the country needs leaders who can solve economic challenges and restore public confidence in government institutions.

Matiang’i insisted that leadership should not be based on personal interests or political pride. He explained that the opposition must unite behind the most suitable candidate capable of bringing change to the country.

His remarks have added fresh energy to growing talks among opposition figures seeking to form a strong alliance before the next election.

At the same time, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement is also expanding its political influence across the country. After holding rallies in several counties, the group is now preparing for a major meeting in Thika on June 14.

The move is seen as an attempt to gain support in the Mt Kenya region, which played a major role in President Ruto’s 2022 victory.

Political observers believe the opposition is now focusing on building stronger national networks early enough before campaigns officially begin.

Meanwhile, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also stepped up preparations for his presidential ambitions.

He recently announced a high-profile fundraising dinner in Nairobi that is expected to attract thousands of supporters and business leaders.

As different opposition leaders continue positioning themselves, Kenyans are now closely watching to see whether the leaders will agree on one candidate or head into the race separately.
