Speaking during his State of the Nation address at Ufungamano House in Nairobi, said that Kenya needs a fresh start to tackle corruption, economic decline, and the collapse of public institutions.
The former Chief Justice said the 2027 general election would be decisive for the country's future.
“I believe in opposition unity, but that unity must be built on principles and not on the pursuit of power.
Maraga said his nationwide tour exposed him to numerous complaints from citize regarding rampant corruption, unemployment, the high cost of living, and the deterioration of healthcare and education services.
He said Kenyans showed that they still have hope despite the challenges they face, but they complained about the disregard for the rule of law, interference in public institutions, and the continued prevalence of corruption.
According to him, leaders have betrayed the dreams of the nation’s founders by turning government into a vehicle for enriching themselves, their families, and their associates.
Maraga accused President William Ruto of perpetuating corruption and excessively increasing the national debt, claiming that nearly half of the government budget is now directed toward debt repayment.
Maraga said he has never been linked to any corruption scandal and is prepared to publicly declare his assets, urging other presidential candidates to do the same.
“Removing President Ruto alone is not enough. We must change the entire leadership system. The next government should not be a game of musical chairs where the same people continue benefiting themselves,” he said.
