A grieving teacher is calling for justice after her son was among three young men who were killed in a violent mob attack in Machakos Town, an incident that has shocked the region and renewed concerns over mob justice.
Connie Mutiso, a teacher and mother of the late Charles Mutiso, said her son was innocent and urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
She recalled that she had travelled with Charles from Kiambu to their family home shortly before the tragedy.
According to her account, Charles later asked for permission to step out and watch a football match with two friends. She said that was the last time she saw him alive.
The three victims have been identified as Charles Mutiso, aged 25, Kennedy Muthungu, aged 29, and his younger brother Stanley Muthungu, aged 22. They were killed on May 31 in Machakos Town.
Reports indicate that the trio had been returning home after watching a football match when the incident occurred. Initial accounts suggest that Charles was struck by a vehicle linked to a local businessman.
Kennedy and Stanley are said to have confronted the driver in an attempt to prevent him from leaving the scene before police arrived.
Allegations later spread among members of the public and boda boda riders that the young men intended to steal the vehicle.
The claims quickly escalated, triggering a mob attack.
The three were assaulted and later set on fire. Postmortem results confirmed that they died from severe burns and smoke inhalation.
Police have arrested a suspect identified as Christopher, who has appeared in court.
A magistrate allowed investigators 21 days to continue with enquiries while he remains in custody.
The killings have sparked public outrage, with families insisting the victims were wrongly accused and caught up in a tragic misunderstanding.
Lawyer Musyoki Mutava has urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to allow legal processes to determine the truth.
As investigations continue, the families are demanding a full and transparent inquiry into the deaths, as concerns grow over rising cases of mob justice in the country.
