Both the two factions have not formed alliances that they will used as the political vehicle in the upcoming polls.
The Broadbased team is made up of UDA, ODM and other parties that were under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance. They will support President William Ruto for the second term.
On the other hand, the United Alternative Government brings together the former Wiper, Linda Mwananchi, Jubilee Party, DCP et al. They are yet to settle on one candidate who will carry their presidential flag.
If Gachagua is barred from running then the race for the opposition ticket is much likely to be between Kalonzo and Matiang'i. In this case, Kalonzo is likely to get the ticket because of different reasons. Below here are some of the reasons;
Kalonzo supported Raila Odinga in three consecutive general elections. Now that Raila is not there, he definitely wants to try his luck on the presidential race.
He is capable of winning majority of Raila supporters since he stood with him for more than 15 years and created good relationship with them.
Some of the late Raila Odinga's supporters like Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna have shown that Kalonzo is a good man and he suits the presidential seat.
In a race between Kalonzo and Matiang'i for the opposition ticket, Linda Mwananchi team are likely to support the former.
Secondly, unlike Kalonzo who has his Wiper party, Fred Matiang'i is not having his own party.
He wants to run on Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party which he is a deputy party leader. This shows that he will not have a big say in Jubilee. It will be difficult for Matiang'i to run without a party of his own.
Additionally, Kalonzo has tried and tested support base in Ukambani and some parts of Coast. On the other hand, Matiang'i has never ran on for a political seat.
No one is surely if his Kisii backyard is actually behind him. This uncertainty puts Kalonzo ahead of him in the battle for opposition ticket.
