Fresh political claims have stirred debate over the shape of Kenya’s opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i, notably missing from an alleged coalition lineup unveiled by presidential aide Denis Itumbi.
According to Itumbi, Wiper Patriotic front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, has already settled on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, as his preferred running mate in a strategy aimed at building a formidable challenge against President William Ruto.
The claims, which have not been officially confirmed by the leaders involved, have nevertheless sparked fresh discussion about who is likely to lead the opposition ticket.
The proposed alliance reportedly draws inspiration from Kalonzo’s long-standing “Ukombozi” message and Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” movement, creating what is being presented as a broader opposition platform.
In a development that has attracted attention, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i was not mentioned among the key figures reportedly being considered for the coalition’s top leadership structure.
His absence has fueled speculation about his place in the evolving opposition equation despite growing calls from some political quarters for him to play a major national role.
Itumbi also claimed that the alliance is considering Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, for the Nairobi governor seat, while former Cabinet Secretary Irungu Nyakera, is being linked to a possible Senate bid.
The remarks appeared to signal that opposition realignments are progressing even as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, takes a temporary break from active political engagements.
However, neither Kalonzo, Sifuna, Matiang’i nor the other leaders mentioned had publicly responded to the claims by the time of publication.
