Amount of Money Found in The Pockets Of Arrested Traffic Officers

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has intensified its campaign against corruption after arresting three traffic police officers stationed at Webuye Police Station over allegations of demanding bribes from motorists along the Webuye–Kitale Road.

The officers, identified as Corporal Kipyego Metto, Police Constable Ben Kiptoo Maswai and Police Constable Alex Kidui Makee, were taken into custody during an operation conducted by officers from the commission's Western Regional Office in Bungoma.

According to the EACC, the arrests followed investigations launched after receiving numerous complaints from motorists, public service vehicle operators and truck drivers who alleged that officers at the roadblock were routinely soliciting money from road users.

The commission said it deployed a surveillance team to monitor activities at the location, where investigators allegedly documented incidents of officers demanding payments from motorists without carrying out legitimate traffic inspections or enforcing road safety regulations.

The anti-graft agency stated that the operation is part of a broader nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating bribery in public service and restoring public confidence in government institutions.

The latest arrests follow similar anti-corruption operations carried out in recent months targeting traffic police officers accused of extorting motorists at various roadblocks across the country.

In previous operations, EACC officers recovered cash suspected to have been obtained through illegal collections during traffic enforcement exercises.

The commission has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening accountability within public institutions by increasing surveillance and intelligence-led operations in sectors considered vulnerable to corruption.

EACC has also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of bribery and abuse of office through its official reporting channels, saying public cooperation remains critical in the fight against corruption and the promotion of integrity in service delivery.
