Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of working with his political rivals in what he claims is a coordinated effort to influence the political future of the Mount Kenya region.
According to Gachagua and his allies, the alleged strategy includes reducing his political influence by cutting funding allocated to his office and limiting his ability to engage with supporters across the country.
Leaders aligned with the former Deputy President have raised concerns over a reported proposal to reduce the budget for the Office of the former Deputy President by 25 percent.
They argue that such a move would significantly affect Gachagua’s operations, particularly his ability to travel and maintain political engagements nationwide.
They also urged the Budget and Appropriations Committee to reconsider the proposal, cautioning against what they described as politically motivated financial decisions.
In addition, they threatened to mobilize public opposition against former committee chair Ndindi Nyoro, accusing him of using his position to undermine Gachagua’s political standing.
Speaking to The Standard, Kirinyaga Senator Murango alleged that there is a deliberate plan to weaken Gachagua by redirecting government funding away from initiatives associated with his political agenda.
He claimed that more resources are being shifted toward agricultural programs in the Mount Kenya region as part of a broader political strategy.
Murango argued that the approach is designed to leave Gachagua vulnerable to criticism from farmers if agricultural challenges remain unresolved.
He further claimed that planned adjustments in the 2026–2027 budget are intended to reduce the former Deputy President’s influence and limit his political activities.
The senator also cited reductions in funding for key agricultural projects, saying the allocation for the Mwea irrigation snail eradication project had been cut by approximately Sh70 million.
He further noted that proposed funding for coffee sector revival initiatives was absent from the current budget framework.
According to Murango, those responsible for the budget changes understand that Gachagua has consistently advocated for agricultural reforms and that farmers may ultimately hold him accountable for any setbacks in the sector.
His supporters have therefore questioned whether the omission of funding for coffee sector improvements is part of a calculated effort to politically isolate the former Deputy President ahead of future political contests.
