"I Won’t Support Anyone" Gachagua Makes Major U-Turn, Rules Out Backing Another Opposition Candidate

DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua has indicated that he will personally seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election rather than support another opposition politician for the country’s top seat.

Gachagua has rejected the idea of becoming a kingmaker who would withdraw from the presidential race to back another contender. 

His latest position represents a significant change from his previous calls for opposition parties to work together and settle on a single candidate capable of challenging President William Ruto.

The former Deputy President has continued to focus on strengthening the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), presenting it as a national political platform that can unite voters from different regions and communities ahead of the 2027 elections.

His political strategy appears increasingly centred on building an independent movement rather than positioning the party as a junior partner within a broader opposition coalition.

Gachagua has also addressed questions surrounding his eligibility to contest for an elective position following his impeachment as Deputy President in 2024. 

He has maintained that the impeachment does not automatically bar him from seeking public office, pointing to his ongoing legal challenge. According to his argument, the matter remains subject to the judicial process and has therefore not received a conclusive final determination.

The DCP leader is expected to provide a clearer picture of his political ambitions on Monday after completing a 58-day consultation exercise at Wamunyoro. 

The consultations are expected to inform his next political steps and shape the direction of his party as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.

Gachagua’s anticipated visit to the United States could also provide an opportunity for him to engage Kenyans living abroad. 

The former Deputy President is expected to use the trip to hear views from members of the diaspora while considering important decisions about his political future.
