Speaking during a meeting with Murang'a leaders at his Wamunyoro home, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said he had been directed by Mt Kenya elders to confront politicians who, in their view, went against the community's political interests by backing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in the by-election.
Gachagua said he would begin his tour in Kinangop before proceeding to Laikipia East, where he intends to campaign against MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, whom he accused of betraying the region by spearheading UDA's push in Ol Kalou.
He also named Kinangop MP Kwenya Thuku as a target of the planned campaign, saying he would mobilise residents against leaders he considers to have defied the political direction taken by the region during the by-election.
DCP's Ol Kalou victory, in which Ngotho garnered an overwhelming majority against UDA's candidate, has since triggered a wave of political realignment in Mt Kenya, with several government-allied leaders reportedly considering defecting to Gachagua's party.
DCP Secretary-General designate John Methu has said the party has since issued strict entry guidelines, barring anyone who campaigned for UDA within Ol Kalou during the by-election from joining DCP.
