“He Does Not Want to Be President”: Details Emerge on the Position Sifuna Allegedly Wants in 2027

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has sparked fresh political debate after making a strong claim about Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Cherargei suggested that Sifuna may not be seriously interested in becoming Kenya’s President, but instead wants to take up a leadership position among the Luhya community. His remarks have added another layer to the growing political contest within the opposition.

The comments come at a time when Sifuna has become one of the most vocal figures in the Linda Mwananchi movement. He has openly pushed for opposition unity and has continued to criticise President William Ruto’s administration.

Sifuna’s name has also featured prominently in discussions about the opposition presidential race. In August, the Luhya Council of Elders endorsed him as its preferred candidate for the presidency under the United Opposition.

That endorsement has made Cherargei’s latest remarks particularly interesting. The senator’s comments appear to question whether Sifuna has what it takes to pursue the top seat or whether his political ambitions are focused elsewhere.

Sifuna, however, has continued to position himself as a national political leader. His recent activities with Linda Mwananchi have attracted supporters from different parts of the country as opposition leaders search for a possible formula to challenge Ruto in 2027.

On Sunday, September 13, political temperatures remained high as Linda Mwananchi leaders held activities in Nairobi while calling for greater opposition cooperation. The movement has continued to use Sifuna as one of its key voices.

The opposition race is still wide open, with several leaders expected to negotiate over who will become the presidential candidate and who will take other senior positions.

Cherargei’s statement is therefore likely to fuel more debate within the Luhya community and the wider opposition camp.

For now, Sifuna has not indicated that he is abandoning his national political ambitions. His next moves will be closely watched as the 2027 race gathers momentum.
