Bad News for Ruto as Pressure to Impeach Him Over Controversial Ebola Deal Grows

Former Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi has called on Parliament to consider impeaching President William Ruto over a proposed agreement between Kenya and the United States involving an Ebola treatment facility.

The proposal has sparked debate across the country, with critics raising concerns about public safety and national sovereignty.

Reports indicate that the United States plans to establish a 50-bed Ebola assessment and treatment centre in Laikipia County. The facility would reportedly cater to American citizens exposed to the virus.

The plan comes as Central Africa continues to battle Ebola outbreaks, increasing fears of possible spread to neighbouring regions, including East Africa.

In support of the arrangement, the US is expected to provide approximately KSh 1.8 billion to strengthen Kenya’s preparedness and response systems against the disease.

However, some leaders and professionals have strongly opposed the move.

Havi criticised the government, accusing President Ruto of exposing Kenyans to unnecessary danger in exchange for foreign support.

According to him, allowing potentially infected foreign nationals into the country could create a major health crisis.

He described the reported agreement as dangerous and warned that Kenya risks becoming a centre for handling Ebola patients from abroad.

The lawyer argued that Parliament should intervene immediately and stop the arrangement before it is implemented.

Havi further referenced Kenya’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming weak monitoring measures contributed to the spread of infections in the country.

He expressed concerns that a similar situation could occur if strict measures are not followed regarding the Ebola plan.

The former LSK boss urged both the National Assembly and Senate to carry out their oversight role and hold the Executive accountable.

He also appealed to Kenyans to pressure their Members of Parliament to reject any proposal they believe could threaten public health.

Havi maintained that elected leaders must prioritise the safety of citizens and ensure that decisions involving national health are subjected to proper scrutiny before implementation.

The debate over the proposed Ebola centre continues to attract mixed reactions, with supporters citing preparedness benefits while critics fear increased health risks for Kenya.
