Gachagua’s 2027 Ambitions: Why the Former Deputy President Is Seeking to Be Opposition's Flagbearer In 2027 Elections

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is increasingly emerging as a key figure in Kenya's opposition politics as preparations for the 2027 General Election begin to gather momentum.

Following his dramatic fallout with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration, Gachagua has embarked on a nationwide political campaign aimed at consolidating support and expanding his influence beyond his traditional strongholds.

Political observers believe Gachagua sees an opportunity to transform himself from a former government insider into the face of a broad opposition movement seeking to challenge Ruto's bid for a second term.

Through public rallies, grassroots meetings, and engagements with opposition leaders, he has steadily positioned himself at the center of discussions about a possible united opposition coalition.

A significant factor behind Gachagua's strategy is his perceived influence in the Mt Kenya region, which remains one of Kenya's most influential voting blocs.

Many analysts argue that securing overwhelming support from Mt Kenya would strengthen his bargaining power within any opposition coalition and improve his chances of being considered for the coalition's presidential ticket.
