"Stop Embarrassing Yourself" Ruto Hits Out at Kalonzo Over Nairobi Shutdown Celebrations on Protests

President William Ruto has criticized Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, accusing him of celebrating the disruption of economic activities in Nairobi during Gen Z protests.

Speaking in Meru on Sunday, Ruto questioned the logic behind a leader rejoicing when citizens are unable to go to work.

He argued that leadership should focus on productivity and national progress rather than disruption.

“Kalonzo is celebrating because people did not go to work on Thursday, just like he has never worked for Kenyans in 50 years,” Ruto stated adding that the former VP was embarrassing himself.

The President’s remarks come after Kalonzo declared June 25, 2026, a symbolic public holiday dubbed “Gen Z Liberation Day.”

The day was meant to honor young protesters who lost their lives during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations. Kalonzo also urged Kenyans to boycott work in solidarity.

The call received aheavy security operation across Nairobi, as police moved to prevent potential unrest.

Major highways leading into the city were barricaded, and numerous checkpoints were set up, effectively restricting movement into and out of the capital.

The impact was immediately felt across the city. Key business hubs, including Westlands and the Central Business District (CBD), experienced a near-total shutdown as shops, supermarkets, and hotels remained closed due to limited access and reduced foot traffic.

Public transport was also disrupted, with police barring matatus from accessing the CBD. This left thousands of commuters stranded on the outskirts of the city, unable to reach their workplaces.

Ruto was speaking during 60th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service at Burieruri Boys Senior School in Maua accompanied by his deputy Kithure Kindiki and leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
