Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed reports claiming that he has already endorsed former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as the opposition's presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, insisting that no such decision has been made.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence during his ongoing 45-day political retreat, Gachagua dismissed media reports suggesting that Musyoka had announced receiving his endorsement.
He accused sections of the media of spreading propaganda intended to create confusion within the opposition coalition.
"Nimeona hii gazeti ya Kasongo (Ruto) inaitwa Star Newspaper ambayo inaendeshwa na National Intelligence Service, Jana wanataka kuleta porojo na fitina na propaganda kwa headline 'Ooh Kalonzo Musyoka amesema ati Rigathi amesema Ni Mimi," Gachagua said.
Gachagua maintained that he does not have the authority to unilaterally endorse any presidential candidate without first consulting his supporters.
He stressed that any decision regarding the opposition's flagbearer would only be reached after extensive consultations among coalition leaders and their respective support bases.
According to the former Deputy President, the opposition is under no pressure to name its presidential candidate at this stage. He said coalition partners will hold discussions before announcing a joint flagbearer next year, allowing enough time to build consensus ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua also revealed that his immediate political objective is to seek the backing of his own supporters before entering negotiations with other opposition leaders. He stated that his first priority during those talks would be to secure support for his own presidential ambitions.
"I am here to seek mandate from my support base, I go for negotiations with my coalition partners. Give me permission and advice to go and talk with them. And just as the Bishop has said our first priority is that I be given the ticket to fly," Gachagua said.
His remarks come as opposition leaders continue consultations on forming a united front to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
