The debate has gained fresh attention as several opposition leaders continue to position themselves for the top seat while also insisting that unity will be necessary to challenge President William Ruto.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said leaders should be ready to put personal ambitions aside if another candidate has a better chance of defeating Ruto. He even indicated that he would be willing to serve as a running mate if that was the best way to secure victory.

Gachagua said the same principle should apply to other leaders, arguing that one candidate should eventually be selected based on who can attract enough support to win the election.
Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi also urged politicians to ask themselves a difficult question: if they cannot lead the opposition ticket, who are they willing to support?
The discussion comes as the opposition faces a crowded field. Among the names being discussed are Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Edwin Sifuna and Ndindi Nyoro.
Nyoro, who recently left the ruling UDA party and joined the People’s Party of Kenya, has also called for opposition leaders to stop fighting among themselves. He has said he would support another candidate if the opposition agrees on one person to face Ruto.
The challenge now is how the opposition will choose its flag-bearer without creating fresh divisions.
