Traffic along Nairobi's busy Outer Ring Road was brought to a standstill on Tuesday, June 30, after angry residents staged fresh protests over the disappearance of a local youth believed to have gone missing during the June 25 demonstrations.
The unrest spread across Kiamaiko, Kariobangi North and Huruma, where hundreds of protesters marched through the streets carrying placards and tree branches while chanting slogans demanding justice. The demonstrations quickly disrupted transport as motorists were forced to seek alternative routes.
Police officers responded by firing teargas canisters in an effort to disperse the crowds and restore order. Thick clouds of teargas engulfed sections of the road as protesters scattered before regrouping in different areas, prolonging the disruption.
The latest unrest marks the third time within days that movement along the Outer Ring corridor has been severely affected, with commuters enduring long traffic jams and delays as security officers attempted to contain the situation.
The demonstrations come amid growing public concern over reported cases of missing activists following recent protests, with families and human rights groups continuing to demand accountability and swift investigations into alleged disappearances.
Authorities had not issued an official statement on Zizo's disappearance by the time of publication, while tensions remained high in the affected neighbourhoods as police maintained a heavy presence to prevent further escalation.
