I Told Shahbal Not to Run for Mombasa Governor” — Ruto

President William Ruto has revealed that he previously advised East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Suleiman Shahbal against running for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat.

Ruto said he had personally cautioned Shahbal about pursuing the highly competitive political position, although the businessman and politician has continued to attract attention in Mombasa politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“I told Suleiman Shahbal not to run for Mombasa governor,” Ruto said.

Shahbal has previously contested the Mombasa governor’s seat and remains a prominent political figure at the Coast.

In 2022, he stepped aside from the ODM gubernatorial contest in favour of Abdulswamad Nassir following pressure from party leaders.

He later apologised to his supporters, saying he regretted making the decision without consulting them.

In recent months, Shahbal has again been linked to the Mombasa gubernatorial race.
