The three were among five people killed in a horrific road crash at Twins Bridge along the Nakuru Eldoret Highway.
Eight other passengers were seriously injured in the accident.
The family had travelled to Nairobi for the police graduation ceremony before beginning their journey home. However, what started as a joyful trip ended in tragedy when their matatu crashed into a stationary trailer at the notorious road section.
One family member, Mercy Kibiwott, escaped death after making a last-minute decision to travel in a different vehicle.
Kibiwott later travelled to Londiani Hospital mortuary after receiving news of the crash. She had been informed that some of the victims had been taken to Nakuru and went to establish what had happened to her relatives.
She confirmed that three of those who died were people close to her, including her mother, cousin and another close family member.
Kibiwott said the loss of three family members at the same time had left her devastated, describing the pain as overwhelming.
The trailer involved in the crash had reportedly stalled on the hill. Its driver, Ahmed Jilo, said he, the turnboy and several police officers were nearby, warming themselves by a fire, when they suddenly heard the impact.
According to Jilo, the matatu crashed into the rear of the stationary trailer, leaving several passengers trapped and injured.
Kuresoi Base Commander Willy Lang’at attributed the crash to speeding and poor weather conditions. He urged motorists to slow down and remain particularly alert when approaching the dangerous section at night.
Lang’at noted that most drivers are using the highway regularly and said they had previously been warned about the risks at the blackspot.

The eight injured survivors were initially taken to Londiani Sub County Hospital before being transferred to Nakuru Level 5 Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, police towed the wreckage to Mau Summit Police Station as investigations into the deadly crash continued.
