Matiang’i Hits Back at Ruto’s ‘Sponsor’ Narrative as Opposition Politics Heat Up

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has responded sharply to President William Ruto's claims that opposition activities are funded by hidden sponsors. He insists ordinary Kenyans are the true financiers of the push for change.

Speaking on 11 September 2026 Matiang'i declared that Kenyans themselves want a new government. He said the people are the real sponsors behind efforts to challenge the current administration.

His remarks come as State House intensifies rhetoric against the Linda Mwananchi movement. Ruto has repeatedly branded the Sifuna-led outfit "Linda Sponsor." He claims it receives funding from former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other figures opposed to his government.

The president's camp argues opposition rallies trucks and mobilisation drives cannot be sustained without wealthy backers. This narrative aims to question the legitimacy of the growing opposition movement across the country.

Matiang'i however sees things differently. As Jubilee Party deputy leader and a declared 2027 presidential contender he frames the movement as citizen driven rather than elite sponsored.
