Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang'i has come out strongly to defend retired President Uhuru Kenyatta after President William Ruto accused him of funding the opposition.
Matiang'i, who was speaking on Thursday, September 11, 2026, during a political engagement in Nyamira County, criticized President Ruto for allegedly targeting Uhuru Kenyatta in his public speeches instead of focusing on delivering his promises to Kenyans.
He dismissed reports that the retired President has been bankrolling the opposition's activities, terming the claims as false, misleading and a diversionary tactic by the Kenya Kwanza government.
His statement came hours after President Ruto, while speaking in State House Nairobi, maintained that Uhuru is busy working with opposition leaders in a plot to remove him from State House in 2027.
Matiang'i told Ruto to leave the former Head of State alone and allow him to enjoy his retirement in peace, warning that continued attacks on Uhuru would only make the opposition more popular.

According to Matiang'i, the opposition is not being funded by Uhuru but by ordinary Kenyans who are tired of the high cost of living, over-taxation and poor governance.
"The opposition is being funded by Kenyans. Kenyans who want change, Kenyans who want the rule of law respected, Kenyans who want jobs for their children. Stop blaming Uhuru Kenyatta for your failures," Matiang'i said.
He also called on Kenyans across the country to work hand in hand with the opposition in the upcoming 2027 general elections, saying the united opposition will ensure that the country is run under the rule of law and that the Constitution is respected.
