Is Uhuru Kenyatta Funding Matiangi's Presidential Bid? Anthony Kibagendi Speaks

Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi has called on Gusii people living in the United States to support former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi's 2027 presidential bid financially, while addressing questions over whether former President Uhuru Kenyatta is funding the campaign.

Speaking to members of the Gusii diaspora, Kibagendi rejected the assumption that Uhuru has been financing Matiangi's political activities. He said the campaign was instead facing financial constraints and urged supporters abroad to help strengthen Matiangi's bid ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kibagendi argued that the limited visibility of Matiangi's campaign should not be interpreted as a lack of political ambition. In his view, the former Cabinet Secretary's efforts could gain greater momentum if supporters provided the resources needed to organise and mobilise voters.

Questions about Uhuru's role have partly been fuelled by Matiangi's association with Jubilee Party, which is led by the former President. In October 2025, Jubilee's National Executive Committee endorsed Matiangi as the party's presidential candidate for the 2027 election and appointed him deputy party leader.

The decision placed Matiangi at the centre of Jubilee's efforts to participate in the wider opposition arrangement ahead of the election. His political activities have consequently continued to attract scrutiny over the extent of Uhuru's involvement in his campaign.

Kibagendi's remarks also point to the broader political positioning of the former President. Uhuru has been linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, although he has not publicly confirmed that he is financially supporting the movement.

President William Ruto has previously accused Uhuru of backing political activities opposed to his administration, claims that have added to speculation over the former President's plans for the 2027 election.

Jubilee was formed in 2016 through the merger of Uhuru's The National Alliance and Ruto's United Republican Party. The party won the 2017 election before the relationship between the two leaders deteriorated, with Jubilee later suffering significant losses during the 2022 General Election.

Matiangi's campaign is now seeking to establish itself ahead of 2027, while opposition parties and political movements continue negotiations over how to challenge Ruto.
